A Clear Record When You Work for Yourself
Your customer should be able to recognize what they bought from you, whether it was handmade goods or a one-time job. A clear receipt gives you both a record to refer to later.
For an invoice already in Docelf, record the payment and create the receipt from it. For a direct sale without an invoice, create a standalone receipt. The aim is the same: a record of money received, not another bill.
How to Create a Self-Employed Receipt
Have the sale details and payment amount ready. The receipt date is the date you received the money, even if you catch up on the paperwork another day.
- Your Name: Use your name or the business name your customer recognizes.
- Your Logo: Add a logo when you have one; it is optional.
- The Customer: Enter the buyer or choose a saved customer.
- Number and Date: Check the receipt number. Use the day payment was received.
- What You Sold: Separate goods and services with their quantities and prices.
- The Payment: Add the discount and tax. Record the amount received and check the balance.
- Notes and Review: Add the payment method and sale reference. Review and send the receipt.
Show Products and Services on One Receipt
A receipt can show handmade goods and a service on the same document. Separate them when they have different prices or tax treatment. Docelf calculates the line amounts, tax, and total from your entries.
This fictional planter sale uses USD. It applies an illustrative 8% tax to the $170.00 of planters only. Delivery and positioning are assumed untaxed for this example.
| QTY | Description | Unit Price | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Custom cedar planter — each | $85.00 | $170.00 |
| 1 | Planter delivery — agreed trip | $25.00 | $25.00 |
| 1 | On-site positioning — fixed fee | $15.00 | $15.00 |
| Subtotal | $210.00 | |
| Sales Tax (8% illustrative) | $13.60 | |
| Total Paid | $223.60 |
The $210.00 subtotal plus $13.60 tax on the planters comes to $223.60, paid in cash on September 22, 2026. The sale is paid in full. Use your own prices and applicable tax treatment.
What to Include in Self-Employed Receipt Notes
A short sale reference makes the receipt easier to find among the other jobs you handle. Notes can also confirm which products and services the payment covers.
Here’s a short note for the planter sale. It confirms the cash payment for the planters, delivery, and positioning.
Example: Notes
- Cash payment of $223.60 received on September 22, 2026, for planter order P-62.
- Payment covers the two planters, delivery, and positioning.
- Paid in full. Thank you for supporting my business.
Keep the Sale and the Payment Together
Give the customer a receipt with your name on it. Docelf calculates the totals so you can check the sale and finish the record.
Use the Name Your Customer Knows
You can enter your own name in Docelf’s business details, or use the business name you use for the sale. A logo is optional. Your contact details give the customer a way to ask about the sale.
Choose colors and fonts that suit your business. An industry name before “Receipt” can help explain your work, and the footer can hold your email, phone number, or website.
Record a Cash Payment for the Sale
Record the cash received and what it paid for. In the planter example, the customer pays $223.60 for the planters, delivery, positioning, and illustrative tax.
For a deposit or partial payment, show only the money received and keep the remaining balance visible. When the rest arrives, record the new payment without counting the earlier amount again.
Keep Receipt Numbers Moving Forward
Choose a starting number for your first receipt, and Docelf numbers the next ones sequentially. Saved customers and products or services help when you sell to the same person again.
A duplicated receipt becomes a new draft with a new number. Check the sale, amount, payment date, and method before sending it. Keep the original as the record of the earlier payment.
Keep a Copy With Your Other Business Records
Use the currency you received: USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, or AUD. An attached PDF or image can carry useful care instructions, product information, or a short service summary.
You can email the receipt, print it, or download a PDF. For receipts emailed from Docelf, the document history shows when they were delivered and opened. Keep the finished receipt with your other records for that sale.

Self-Employed Receipt Template FAQs
-
Do I need a business logo to create a receipt?
No. You can create the receipt with your name or business name and contact details. A logo is optional in Docelf.
-
Can the receipt include both goods and services?
Yes. Use separate lines for the products and services that were charged separately. Show their quantities and prices, and use the tax treatment that applies to the actual sale.
-
How do I show a cash payment?
Record the amount received and identify cash as the payment method. In the example, the $223.60 cash payment covers the $210.00 subtotal and $13.60 tax.
-
Should I restart receipt numbers for each customer?
Use a distinct number for each receipt rather than reusing a number for another customer. You can choose your first receipt number in Docelf, and new receipts are numbered sequentially.
-
Does a receipt replace all my other business records?
No. It confirms a particular payment. Keep the related sale, job, and other records you use for your business. Docelf helps create and organize documents; it is not accounting software.
-
What should I send for a job that has not been paid?
Send an invoice when you need to request payment. Create a receipt after receiving money, including a deposit or partial payment, and show any remaining balance separately.
Record the Next Payment With Less Repeated Typing
Keep a clear receipt for the sale, then get back to running your business.
- Use the name and details your customer knows
- Separate the sale price from the payment received
- Send the receipt and keep a copy for your records
