How to Create a Receipt

Already recorded a payment on a Docelf invoice? Open it and create the receipt from there. Starting fresh? Follow the steps below.

A good receipt answers four questions: Who paid? What did they pay for? How much did they pay? When and how did you receive the payment?

How to create a receipt with Docelf
  1. Add Your Business: Enter the business name and contact details your customer should use.
  2. Add Your Logo: Add your logo if you want the receipt to match your other documents.
  3. Add the Customer: Choose a saved customer or enter the customer's details.
  4. Add the Receipt Number and Date: Add a unique receipt number and the payment date.
  5. List What the Customer Paid For: Add what the customer paid for. Include the quantity and price when needed.
  6. Record the Payment and Check the Total: Add any discount or sales tax. Record the amount paid and payment method. Docelf updates the total and balance.
  7. Add a Note and Send: Add a short note if needed. Check the receipt, then email it, print it, or download the PDF.

Before you send: Check the customer and payment date. Review the amount paid and any balance. Make sure the payment method is correct.

After You Send the Receipt

  • Keep the receipt with the related invoice and payment record so you can find the full transaction later.
  • For a partial payment, show the amount paid and remaining balance, then create another receipt when the next payment arrives.
  • If you correct a receipt, clearly mark and save the revised version so both records are easy to follow.
